The Last Of 2010...

Thanks for a great 2010! This year really produced a lot great new shoots & projects. It truly has been a pleasure to work with everyone we worked with this year. Looking forward to a fantastic 2011...
The next few weeks have me in Chicago again and then off to Dallas, TX.
Should be a lot of fun...

Part ii...

From another shoot for the International Institute... this time featuring a refugee nurses assistant class. The frame in the lower right corner is great. The gentleman had been struggling in the classroom and finally got the grade he had hoped for on his exam. I felt lucky to be there for it. Pure joy, just pure joy...

International Institute Part 1...

This is the first installment in a series of entries I have shot on assignment here in Minneapolis. Profiling refuge families for the International Institute, the above photos show a family from Bhutan. We spent the afternoon shooting, drinking hot chai teas and discussing our favorite Nepalese movies...

The Northcountry...

Just got back into the cities after a cool shoot up north in Two Harbors. We got a good amount of snow throughout Minnesota this week, which made for some classy, winter imagery. As we get into winter, warm cider and fires, I am reminded of why I live where I do. The beauty that Northern Minnesota has is really quite breathtaking. It was a blast getting to shoot up there as well, could not have picked a better time to go up on assignment...
I'll be working on post production this week as well as a mid week shoot for the International Institute. Should be interesting as we'll be shooting profiles of immigrant families here in Minneapolis...

Tea Time South of Tokyo...

After having the opportunity to shoot and write a story in the Shizuku Province in Japan, on the process that green tea goes through start to finish, I thought it might be interesting to post a little of the work that came from it.
It really was an interesting process, and one that has delicately been passed down through generations. I spent my time with a well known tea farmer and his son, who actually have been asked to produce the tea that the Japanese emperor drinks... not a bad client to have I imagine.
We walked, picked, dried, cut, chopped, swept, weighed... and then drank. After getting to have such an intimate walk with the tea throughout the shoot, I think it tasted that much sweeter.
It was a really interesting challenge to do the writing for the story as well...

Viviendo El Sueño...

I recently had the pleasure of working with Michael Cunningham on a shoot, some of the better local talent the Twin Cities has to offer. I came up with a concept for a shoot of a soccer player, a "day in the life" type of shoot. We came up with some cool images and will hope to share more later.
After we get a proof back on the images used, I'll post them as well.

We set up our lights, and shot on a white sweep for the top image, and used natural light and a few strobes in an abandoned parking lot for the rest of the images. Trying some new post production methods, I think some of the images have a different feel than previous projects.... enjoy!

Running & Gunning...

Recently got to shoot the Micael Jordran of auto parts in Minneapolis. On location, I got the opportunity to shoot the CEO of Advance Auto Parts. We spent an afternoon scouting lights and locations before taking advantage of every minute of time we were allowed. The light ended up being lovely and we worked with some in store lighting to come up with as natural a look as we could.
This week looks like it will produce some pretty cool images on our jobs. I'll be sure to update the blog as soon as we can. Working on portfolio reviews and fine tuning our promo material these days...

Blowin' Through The Windy City...

Just got back from being on the road in Chicago last week. We had a great shoot and enjoyed the windy city, always a great place to be shooting in. We got to follow around some players from the Chicago Blackhawks as well as a juinors team from Canada. It really was an interesting shoot which produced some cool, new shots.
Just about ready to send it out the door, hard drives and all...

Enticing Ecuador...

Fresh food and faces were a plenty while on our recent shoot in Ecuador, South America. Normally I do not get the chance to do a lot of food shoots, but always relish the chance... as it is often followed up by a sample of what you're shooting. Always a bonus.
This week has us shooting in Chicago for a few days and then back to Minneapolis for a shoot at the end of the week...

Favorite Subjects...

An Icelandic architect who was a good friend to me in Denmark. Bjarni was talent for a shoot we did earlier this spring and also taught me one of my favorite songs of all time. A beautiful Icelandic folk song. Just about as good as it gets...

Boston, MA...

Back from a quick shoot in Boston. On one of our days, getting done early allowed us to stroll around a bit and catch some good East Coast light as the sun was going down, and a huge, amber harvest moon came up over the Atlantic. Had a great time on the job, came back with a nice body of work too... Shooting in the Twin Cities the next two weeks...

Fantastic Fall...

Loving all the fall delicacies that Minnesota has to offer. As many of us have done at this time of the year, I was lucky to take a day of recently and head out to an apple orchard for a day of rich yellows, rust reds and plenty of crisp apples.
Heading out to Boston this week, just a little in and out, returning to the cities beginning of next week. Hope to be able to share some more work soon. Got a few jobs coming up in the next few weeks that should be fun, check back for more updates....

New York. NY...

From the city that never sleeps, and apparently never walks either... Leaving for Ecuador this week for a very interesting shoot. Looking forward to sharing updates upon getting back into the states, until then, we're not sure what we'll get up onto the blog while on location.
Crisp mountain mornings the worlds second highest capital await. Afternoons shooting in ancient cities with ancient traditions. Should be visually, a very interesting job...

Guatemala...

Yesterday was Guatemalan independence day. I was lucky to spend quite a bit of time in Guatemala over the last few years and just wanted to share an image from Guatemala as they celebrate 189 years of independence...

Fashionably New Work...

Always a treat to be able to share new work that you are excited about. This was a recent shoot, one that we also shot video on which when the cut comes back, will certainly be available as a blog post. I think this job produced some of new work that will be taking us in a new direction for future shoots... of course, thanks a million to all who helped out on this...

Shall We Dance?...

Enjoyed shooting in the "dog days" of summer recently. Looking forward to some autumn shoots coming up though, a good sweater and perhaps a hot cider.
Some cool new work should be up soon, including posting some of my recent video/still collaborations. As clients ask for motion along with stills more and more, I am hoping to share some of the pieces from shot projects. Updates to come...

The Toppermost...

I recently had the opportunity to photograph Ron Schultz for the Lawdragon 500, profiling the top 500 lawyers in American. Ron, a Minneapolis based lawyer, is one of the top lawyers being profiled in the upcoming campaign. I wanted to shoot this different that a normal shot you might see and ended up finding this awesome little pocket of light in the exit ramp of a nearby parking garage. So I asked Ron if we could go out, in the 95 degree heat, walk across a work zone and use this small, yet totally great, space. We shot there, the light was good and Ron's suit was perfect. And now, should I ever need (hopefully not!) a lawyer, I know who to call...

Find Us On FOUND FOLIOS...

Excited to be up on Found Folios this year, just recently got up my portfolios which will be changing throughout the year as new work comes in. This is a really cool online portfolio that allows past, present and future clients to see a good selection of work in a easy to navigate format. Right now there are three galleries up to browse, with a diverse selection of work from all sorts of assignments. To check it out, go to Found Folios.
In the process of getting some cool projects under way, some domestic and potential for some over seas. Looks like we might end up in Ecuador next month, camera in hand for some cool shooting. Also hoping to shoot a safari project in Uganda for a start up safari company in early 2011, working out the details...

Finding An Answer...

On a recent shoot for The Garage, we had a lot of great talent on set. The only thing missing was something to bring them together, something for them to interact with to give us the imagery we needed. I came across a small red ball, which ended up being the answer we needed. As they talked, played and laughed, the ball threw in just the right amount of color and distraction. We walked away with some great frames, easily one of the best "distracting red bouncy ball with youth" shoots I have ever done...

From Cover to Cover...

Had the chance to shoot a the cover and a spread for Imagine Pub recently. Have not yet had the chance to see the tears, but am looking forward to see which images they choose to go with... Off to shoot a story for an LA based magazine today...

Cold As Ice...

Getting images processed after a great shoot out east with Bauer. Some new angles and a new set to shoot on this year allowed for some great new content. Really excited to get it out and see how it looks.
Lot's going on these days... shot a project in Minneapolis tonight and got in just before the rain. I'll be working on post production and getting estimates out for the next few days...

Story Time...

Here is the opening spread for my upcoming article purchased by Claretions Publising (www.claretians.org) out of Chicago. This story was shot in Guatemala, in the western highlands, where ancient Mayan traditions are still the norm. Food, clothing and language are all largely the same as they have been for decades past.
Upon returning to the states I worked on some writing, trying to capture in words what I was not able to capture with photographs. Together, they made a nice piece and I am excited to see the printed product...

Roanoke, VA...

A few pulls from our recent shoot our East. Thanks to everyone involved for all their great help and direction. Can't wait to see some of these in use, there was some great stuff in there... even if it meant laying down on driveways in 100 degree heat.

Getting everything lined up for shooting in Atlantic City, NJ next week. 15 of the best NHL players in the world, a beautiful coast line and a nice walk on the boardwalk. Sounds great!

Post Post Post...

Just got done shooting 25,000+ shots in five days. Resting the fingers and starting to sift through them before getting the job out the door. In the mean time, thought I would share some recently captured portraits. People in their places, for me, always interesting... Stay tuned for updates from Virginia...

Gettin' Up Early...

With nice long days ahead of us now, it's tempting to get up early some days and see what you can find. As long as you don't hit the snooze, you'll find some good stuff no doubt.

We're heading out east to Virginia to shoot this week, updates and a few teasers to come...

And Then There Was Light... Kind Of

We've been asked to make photographs in some pretty tough situations. Squeezing every last bit of light that is left out of a situation. That last ounce of energy that the sun has before it sits behind some trees might be just what you need. A few recent portraits took my camera and myself to the limits of using light, but hey, we still were able to make a few shots turn out. Shot these from quite a few different angles, and of course, it seems to be the last frame that you like best!

Setting Sail...

A few selects from our recent shoot abroad.
Summer is in full swing here, projects are flying out (hence the bird shot) and we're keeping the batteries fully charged. As always, thanks to everyone involved on this, as well as current, shoots.

Ohhhhhh Canada!

After a car drive to the border, a boat trumping through numerous lakes, braving the fierce bugs, a long hike up a small mountain and a rain storm, we finally arrived in Canada for a shoot on rock climbers. Shooting was great, with a lot of amazing rock formations making for interesting imagery. Hope to post more in the upcoming weeks as it becomes available...

The Alure Of The Road...

These next few months are looking to take us on the road quite a bit, which is always great. The new challenges that await within new faces and locations always give you a creative burst of energy. I am on the road later today to shoot a climbing story in Canada and then back on the road just as soon as we can get the images out the door. Hope to be able to share some of it soon...

Taking It On The Town...

I am really excited to have a new portfolio getting printed up this week, it should be ready to head out on the town in June. With a large new body of work from the last year, this year's book showcases lifestyle work that spreads both the globe and industry. With work touching on commercial, editorial and advertising, there seems to be a little something for everyone. Looking forward to having it in shops around the Minneapolis market as well as the states. Be in touch with any questions or to request one...

Taking A Break To Smell The Flowers...

Recently got back from a great shoot in the Netherlands. Shooting in a variety of places, we were on tulip farms shooting the cultivation process and then off the the largest flower auction in the world, just south of Amsterdam (in the 3rd largest building in the world!). Starting to go through the work to get it out in time, and I think we were able to tell a great story. More images, from the tulip shoot and other lifestyle shoots we did while there to come... Sure was lovely to look at...

Personal Project...

I recently shot on a personal project with a basketball player from Minneapolis. This is something I think is really important for anyone in any industry, work on your craft off the clock.
Trying some new lights and lighting techniques, we waited for the right light to come in on a nice spring evening and ended up getting some great content. With a new book scheduled to come out in the next month or so, this was a great shoot and some potential book images too...

Gettin' Down...

On a recent shoot with an up and coming dance group & Vans, we got the chance to run around to some cool locations with great light. This ongoing project has the potential to capture some new, exciting work that I am thrilled to be shooting...
